Julia Fiona Roberts' parents are Walter Grady Roberts and Betty Lou Bredemus. Roberts is from the fourth generation of Roberts family to have lived in Atlanta. This started with her grandfather John Pendleton Roberts who was an agriculturalist. Early in his life, her dad became fascinated with theater. As studying at Emory University in 1952 he performed in shows on campus and elsewhere in Atlanta. He joined the Air Force. While stationed at Biloxi in Mississippi, he acted in a production that he performed in with Betty Lou Bredemus. The couple got married in 1955 and the couple's first child Eric Anthony was born in 1956. The couple divorced in 1957. the air force and Walter began his studies at Tulane University in New Orleans Louisiana. Walter became a member of Atlanta Academy Theater and Harrington Scenic and Lighting Studio at the time the family moved from Atlanta to Decatur, Georgia in 1960. Walter and Betty Lou produced a Saturday morning show on local television for children known as Bum Bum and His Buddies in 1964. It was a venture they self-financed. In 1964, Walter and Betty Lou founded their own organization called the Actors and Writers Workshop. It ran for 6 years. The couple had another two children, Lelisa Billingsley (1965) (also named Lisa) and Julia Billingsley (1967) (also know by the same name Julie).
